What does “computadora” mean, and why does Spain say “ordenador”?

Computadora is the usual word for a computer across much of Latin America, and some countries, Chile and Colombia among them, prefer the masculine computador. In Spain the everyday word is ordenador, borrowed from French ordinateur. All three are understood everywhere, so use whichever matches the people around you; hearing computadora usually points to a speaker from the Americas.

The clip’s example is la computadora rosa and la computadora negra: notice the colour comes after the noun. The teacher also says agregar for “add,” a verb you will hear more in the Americas, where Spain leans toward añadir. In casual speech you may hear the clipped compu. Laptop words vary even more by country, from laptop to portátil to notebook, so listen for the local one rather than memorising a rule.
