What is a “소개팅 (sogaeting)” in Korea?

소개팅 is a blind date arranged by someone you know. The word is 소개 (introduction) plus -팅, taken from the English “meeting,” so it’s literally an “introduction meeting.” A friend or coworker who knows you both passes on a number, and you meet one-on-one, usually for coffee or dinner. It’s one of the most common ways Koreans start dating.

In older university dating culture, 미팅 could mean a group blind-date setup; today 미팅 also simply means a meeting. You 소개팅을 하다 or 소개팅에 나가다 (“go out on one”), and you can ask a friend 소개팅 시켜 줘 (“set me up”). In the clip a speaker says most people spend the date explaining themselves, and argues the winning move is to keep asking questions: 소개팅에 나가서 자기 얘기를 할 필요가 없어요, “there’s no need to talk about yourself on a blind date.”
