Echt waar is two emphatic words paired: echt (really) and waar (true). Together they form the Dutch equivalent of English "really?" or "no way" — the standard reaction to surprising news. Dutch listeners drop echt waar? into conversations several times a day; it's the verbal equivalent of raised eyebrows.

The phrase also works as an asserter, with falling intonation: echt waar meaning "for real, I'm telling you." A Dutch speaker swearing the truth of a claim ends with echt waar the way an English speaker might end with "I swear."
